7 Simple Joys of Going on a Picnic Alone

How to Plan the Perfect Solo Luxury Picnic (and Why You’ll Love It More Than You Expect)
Somehow, I made it into my late thirties without ever attending a movie by myself. It had never even occurred to be until my best friend did it. When she mentioned that she was alone at the theatre I nearly clutched my pearls. I knew immediately something was wrong with my thought process. For whatever reason, the movie theatre was purely a group activity to me.
Picnics compute in the same way—as a group outing only to be indulged in with others. But who says you can’t savor a cheese tray in the sunshine and people watch while you relish the breeze all by your lonesome? Nobody, that’s who.
Why a Solo Luxury Picnic Is Exactly What You Didn’t Know You Needed
Being perceived as lonely is the most ridiculous worry to have the more I think about it. I have no problem running errands alone or even going to get a massage or my nails done. So why should this version of self-care be treated differently? Living on my own and sustaining myself as an adult was something I worked towards. Something that made me proud of myself. The ability to treat yo’self is no different.
Hosting is a pastime for me as well. I love a pretty tablescape because I enjoy putting them together and seeing the end product. It makes me smile.
The problem is sometimes I spend so much time hosting for others—birthdays, showers, holidays, milestones—that I forget that it’s ok to be the guest of honor, too. That cozy throw blanket? For you. That chilled spritzer with a side of macadamia nut cheese and dried pineapple rings? Yours. You don’t need a group text or a reason to create a stunning, sun-soaked scene. All you need is the willingness to show up for yourself, exactly as you are.
If you’ve ever felt like planning something beautiful just for yourself was somehow “too much” or “not worth it,” let this post be your permission slip to rethink that. A few little random tips for packing your solo picnic. While I don’t mind walking, but I do mind walking back and forth. Best way to avoid this is to grab one of your biggest tote bags and fill it with everything you’ll need ahead of time. I’m able to just then carry my tray in one hand, sling the bag over the other shoulder and go.
Chop and prep the foods as best you can ahead of time. If you’d rather make food prep part of your solo picnic, be sure to pack the proper tools to build your snack and clean up the mess it might make. Think about how to keep your drink cool ahead of time.
Create your music playlist ahead of time. If you’re planning to journal, grab a prompt or two just in case you get stage fright.
Even though it’s a picnic for one, bring two napkins. You can use one as your little table cloth and it’ll be nice to have a backup in case of spills.
Bring a little baggie or storage dish that you can use for rubbish before you leave. If it’s all packed together before you get up, it’ll be easier to just chuck it on your way out or as soon as you get home.
It’s a chance to indulge in joy without waiting for an occasion or an invitation.
